TYPES OF HANDRAILS WE INSTALL

Burkhardt Custom fabricates and installs the following types of handrails:

  • Wrought Iron
  • Architectural Steel
  • Cable Railings

Wrought Iron Handrails

As mentioned on the fence page, true wrought iron was phased out in the 70's and replaced with steel

Today, wrought iron refers to the style instead of the material.

This style of handrail is commonly used on stairs and balconies.

Many homeowners and property managers in Los Angeles are finding themselves needing to replace old handrails not just due to wear but to meet building and safety code standards.

While vertical pickets remain the basic design choice, ornamental elements can also be used here as they are in fences.

Balusters, scrolls, and other decorative elements can be incorporated.

Furthermore, similar to steel-frame wall toppers, posts can be secured with either plates and anchor bolts or using high-strength anchor bond cement once a hole is core-drilled into the concrete.

The latter method is preferred for strenght and longevity.

Architectural Steel Handrails

Just as with wall toppers, designer sheet metal from places like McNichols can be incorporated into a handrail design.

This is another instance where a modern, contemporary property is looking for options that elevate and fit the exisiting vibe of the home or property.

In some instances, stainless steel is the material of choice for these circumstances.

Cable Railings

Another custom option we offer at Burkhardt Custom is the popular cable railing.

Usually made of stainless steel, these popular options provide maximum visibility while still meeting the building and safety code requirements.

The posts for these cable railing systems can either be wood, steel, or stainless steel.

We recommend steel or stainless steel as wood can breathe with the seasons, causing the tension to slack and require regular adjustment.
